Toward damage-tolerant bulk metallic glasses: Fracture behavior and brittle–ductile transition

چکیده

Abstract In order to replace the conventional alloys with bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), studies have been actively conducted investigate mechanical characteristics of BMGs in various aspects. One major ongoing issues is process-related variations key properties such as fracture toughness. Although there still a lack knowledge on how prevent catastrophic failure most BMGs, Griffith’s theory, modified by Irwin and Orowan, allows us understand that dissipation plastic energy atomic rearrangement within shear band factor designing damage-tolerant preventing crack opening. this article, we discuss behavior relation theory review examined intrinsic extrinsic factors, alloy composition, temperature, sample size, strain rate affect brittle–ductile transitions BMGs. As several recently reported excellent toughness similar ductile low-carbon steels, will be new class high-performance structural engineering materials significant technological strengths. Fracture Toughness Study on Bulk Metallic Glasses and Novel Joining Method Using Bulk Metallic Glass Solder

The fracture toughness of three new compositional variants of the Zr-Ti-Be-LTM (Late Transition Metal) family of bulk metallic glasses (BMG’s) are studied in the as-cast and annealed condition. Quaternary Zr-Ti-Cu-Be alloys consistently had linear elastic fracture toughness values greater than 80 MPa·m, while Vitreloy 1, a Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be alloy, had an average fracture toughness of 48.5 MPa·m wi...

Size-dependent fracture toughness of bulk metallic glasses

The fracture toughness is a critical material property that determines engineering performance. However, as is well known for crystalline materials, if certain sample geometry and size requirements are not met, test results become sample-size dependent and difficult to compare between different studies. Here, the room-temperature fracture toughness of the Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) Zr52...

Fracture behaviors under pure shear loading in bulk metallic glasses

Pure shear fracture test, as a special mechanical means, had been carried out extensively to obtain the critical information for traditional metallic crystalline materials and rocks, such as the intrinsic deformation behavior and fracture mechanism. However, for bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), the pure shear fracture behaviors have not been investigated systematically due to the lack of a suitabl...
